About X-Rays (Radiographs)

X-rays, also known as radiographs, are one of the most common medical imaging techniques that a vet can use to help better understand what’s going on with your pet. To take a radiograph, the patient lies down a table and is exposed to a very small amount of  x-ray radiation (don’t worry, this is a harmless amount of radiation and we try to minimize exposure) while a detector under the patient captures the x-rays to create a digital image. The vet can then read the x-ray results and provide recommendations for any next steps in the treatment plan. Please note that copies of your pet’s x-rays can be provided upon request.

When Are X-Rays Needed?

X-rays can be helpful in diagnosing a wide variety of complications. This form of medical imaging captures images of both bones and internal organs, such as the lungs. X-rays are particularly good at highlighting fractures or other kinds of internal trauma, identifying any foreign objects that your pet may have swallowed, and even diagnosing pneumonia.

If an x-ray is recommended by one of our vets, we will ensure that the process is as quick and painless as possible while getting the information needed to best take care of your pet.

If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health or if you think your pet may need an x-ray for any reason, please give us a call at 919-380-1157.
